Day One Recap of Pony-13 World Series

Day one of the 17th annual Pony-13 World Series from Modesto California started off with close games and not so close games. The big game of the day was played between Sierra Madre, CA and Hagerstown, MD with Sierra Madre, CA coming on top.

GAME 1: San Jose PAL 14, Redondo, CA 0

 The battle between these two teams took place on day one of the 2021 Pony-13 World Series as San Jose PAL was the victor over Redondo, CA in game one 14-0 in five innings.

San Jose PAL jumped out to a lead in the first inning, when Alexander Kim singles on a fly ball to left fielder Aidan Yamashita.

San Jose PAL added to their lead in the second inning, scoring five runs. Julian Cazares started the inning by singling to the shortstop. Liam Wong hit a double scoring Travis Linane who got on base by a walk. To end the top of the second inning pitcher Yuya Nakmura produced a strike out.  

Redondo, CA wasn’t done fighting. Lucas Alvear started the bottom of the second inning with a walk. Followed by John Hall who also walked advancing Alvear to second. It looked like hope when San Jose shortstop made an error which allowed Redondo, CA to have bases loaded. The strong defense of San Jose PAL stopped them. Alexander Kim had his second strikeout of the inning to stop Redondo, CA.

The third inning was San Jose PAL biggest inning. Julian Cazares started the inning by hitting a single to the right fielder. Cazares stole 2nd base and advances to 3rd on a dropped 3rd strike. Nathan Choi made bases loaded when he laid down a bunt to the third baseman. Christian Nevarez singled to center fielder scoring both Adam Larson and Nathan Choi. Alexander Kim scored on a sacrifice fly by Christian Nevarez.  

Before the end of the game San Jose PAL managed to add two more runs in the top of the fifth. Liam Wong doubled to center field. Wong scored on an error by the left fielder. Julian Cazares singled to the right fielder. To end the top of the fifth Keijiro Hattori struck out two.  

With the result, San Jose PAL moves to 1-0 in the World Series and will face  San Antonio, TX today July 24th at 4:00 p.m.  PST/US. Redondo, CA drops to 0-1 and will face Mount Pleasant, MI today July 24th at 10:00 a.m.

GAME 2: Sierra Madre, CA 1, Hagerstown, MD 0

 Sierra Madre, CA outlasted Hagerstown, MD in the second game of the 2021 Pony-13 World Series as Sierra Madre defeated Hagerstown 1-0.

The pitching was strong on both side. Sierra Madre, CA pitchers struck out ten, while Hagerstown, MD struck out 11.

Sierra Madre, CA scored when Ezekiel Rodriguez singled to the center fielder scoring one run.

Bradley Loiacono was the starting pitcher for Sierra Madre, CA. He pitched for 2.3 innings, allowing zero runs on four hits, striking out three and walking one.

Ryan Swartz was on the mound for Hagerstown, MD. He gave up the solo run on two hits over 3.3 innings.

Cooper Starkey led Hagerstown, MD with two hits in his three at bats.

With the results, Sierra Madre, CA moves to 1-0 in the World Series and will face La Quinta, CA today July 24th at 7:00p.m. PST/US. Hagerstown drops to 0-1 and will face Bel Passi today July 24th at 1:00p.m.

GAME 3: San Antonio, TX 9, Mount Pleasant, MI 2

San Antonio, TX beat Mount Pleasant, MI in the third game of the 2021 Pony-13 World Series.

San Antonio, TX pulled away in top of the seventh making the lead 9-2. San Antonio scored six runs in the seventh inning. Singles came from Andrew Arizola and Costilla IV, an error on a ball put in play by Lino Garcia Jr. and Emest Garcia, and a groundout by Christopher White II.

Costilla IV was the pitcher for San Antonio, TX. He went seven innings only giving up two runs on five hits, striking out eleven and walking one.

William Garcia was on the mount for Mount Pleasant, MI. Garcia went six innings, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out four and walking one. Brady Edwards and Brady Davis entered the game as relief, throwing two-thirds of an inning and one-third of an inning respectively.

Blake Walcutt went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Mount Pleasant, MI in hits.

With the results, San Antonio. TX moves to 1-0 in the World Series and will face San Jose PAL today July 24th at 4:00 p.m. Mount Pleasant, MI moves to 0-1 and will face Redondo, CA today at 10:00 a.m.

GAME4: LA QUINTA, CA 17, BEL PASSI, CA 1

 Bel Passi, CA took a hard loss to La Qunita, CA. The final score was 17-1 with La Quinta, CA being the winner. La Quinta, CA had a big first inning, going through their whole line-up with some players having two at bats. Kobee Finnikim led the way with a single to center field. Followed by Sebastian Morales who scores Finnikin. G Martinez hit a double scoring Nicholas Rodriguez who was hit by a pitch. Due to an error, La Quinta was able to capitalize on it scoring Jonathan Gurrola.

Berntsen was on the mound for La Quinta, CA. He surrendered zero runs on zero hits over one inning, striking out two and walking zero.

For Bel Passi, CA Tanner McCain was on the mound. He lasted one-third of an inning allowing two hits and three runs while walking zero. Isaiah Hernandez, Anderson Burge, and Rocco Fontana all came in as reliefs for Bel Passi.

La Quinta, CA scattered nine hits. Gurrola and Martinez each racked up multiple hits for La Quinta, CA. La Quinta, CA stole ten bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Kobee Finnikin led the way with three.

With the results, LA Quinta, CA moves to 1-0 in the World Series and will face Sierra Madre, CA today at 7:00p.m. Bel Passi, CA moves to 0-1 in the World Series and will face Hagerstown, MD today at 1:00p.m.
