Long Time Board Member Retires

At the conclusion of annual Executive Board Meeting, Don Goebel made the decision to retire. Goebel has been involved with PONY Baseball and Softball for more than 40 years. Don worked his way from coaching all the way to an Executive Board member. He served 33 years as a Field Director and 25 years on the International Board of Directors.

When asked who had the most influence on him during his time with PONY, Don replied “Joe Gagliardi.” Joe is the Vice President of the West Zone. Just like Goebel, Joe has been involved with PONY Baseball and Softball for over 40 years.

“My father has led by example with commitment to giving back to the community,” said Chris Goebel, Don’s son who is also on the International Board of Directors. “When you hear him talk about purpose, you naturally follow.”

Goebel first became involved with PONY because he wanted to give back to his community. Giving back to your community is rewarding and a life changing experience. Not only did PONY Baseball and Softball play a major role in his life, but he also played a major role in the success of PONY Baseball and Softball.

“Having dedicated Field Directors is a huge part of success,” Goebel said. “They make the tournament season enjoyable. People who love what they are doing and enjoy what they are doing makes a huge impact. That’s why I stayed involved for so long.”

Goebel said that expanding tournament play for All Star Teams was one of his proudest moments. Recognizing these players hard work is important. The Board and the volunteers make it possible for these players to play the game they love.

“Any advice I have to give to the current Board or any future Board members is, put the corporation first,” Goebel said. “Moving the organization forward is what matters.”

Don would like to give special thanks to his family for all the support over the 40 plus years. His wife Cindy and the kids Beth and Eithan, Brent and Erin, and Chris and Jamie.

“Don Goebel filled many important roles with PONY over his 40 year career,” state Abraham Key, PONY President and CEO. “Don was instrumental in guiding the organization as Treasurer through several significant periods including the pandemic. We will miss Don’s steady leadership, passion and love of the game and our participants.”
